A classic rivalry for a classic game. The Mooresville Pioneers are taking on the Decatur Central Hawks for the Homecoming game this year.
With a good start to the season with a record of 3-1, Mooresville is ready to face a defending state champion. With the Homecoming game sneaking up closer and closer on the 19th of September, players and fans alike are jumping in their seats for this rematch against Decatur and Mooresville. The Pioneers are averaging around 200 passing yards a game, while Decatur is much more of a run heavy team. Averaging 288 rushing yards per game. With both offenses running a much different scheme, it seems that there will be a difference of each side of the ball. More available stats for each of these teams are available at MaxPreps.
Just two years ago, Mooresville lost to Decatur during Homecoming 27-21. Last year at Decatur’s own homecoming game, Mooresville fell 55-14. Mooresville and Decatur’s game is always highly anticipated by both players, and coaches. Mooresville’s Head Coach Mike Gillan knows that this won’t be an easy fight for the Pioneers.
“They’re really hard to prepare for. Number one priority is to compete and come home with the win,” Gillin said.
Mooresville does seem to have a striking advantage going into the game. During the season opener, Decatur starting quarterback, senior Bo Polston, dislocated his shoulder, leaving sophomore Eli Hill as his replacement. Mooresville’s Tyler Denny says this gives them a “boost of confidence,” and “we’re ready for it,” In preparation for the Decatur game, Mooresville’s team isn’t doing anything special, but they know that this game is different for the school.
“We have those games marked on our calendar,” Denny said.
The rivalry between the Hawks and Pioneers dates back for decades, and the games have grown personal for not only the fans, but also the players. After two years of losses, Mooresville center Ronald Hamblen knows what’s in store for this classic game.
“Hawks are always our big rival. Personal for them and us,” Hamblen said.
Years and years of battling has led both of these teams into the game that keeps people waiting each and every year. Both teams are getting ready for this battle, but this year, with the defending state champions coming to Mooresville’s home turf, an upset could be on the rise.
