The girls on the wrestling team got hyped for their first match Wednesday, November 8. Many of the girl wrestlers are ready to take on the challenge. Coach Mikesell is the Head coach for wrestling. For the past week, he has been getting his athletes ready for the upcoming match.
“We are expecting our first year girls to compete hard and have some fun, they have been working hard and learning fast, so we are expecting they will use the little bit of technique they have to score some points and win against other inexperienced girls. Our second year girls have a year under them and should be able to compete with just about anyone in our area, so we are expecting them to have fun and score points,” Mikesell said.
“From the girls side we want to see hustle, effort and them staying in good body position during their matches. We will evaluate the video and then correct our technical mistakes each week and plan to see growth in their skill sets,” Mikesell said.
Many of the girl wrestlers, like Senior Mady Law, are pumped for future matches and plan to have a great season. For the Franklin Central match Law is unsure, but has hope.
“I don’t have super high expectations for the meet this Wednesday with only having five practice prior to this meet. Also Franklin Central was a tough team last year so I hope we all can pull through and get some pins. Personally I think I will perform okay, with only having the 5 practices before this meet I’m in shape but not completely in wrestling shape. I’m hoping to get a pin and my goal is to get a pin, but this has been a difficult week with going back and forth from football and wrestling.” Law said.
Many of the girl wrestlers are determined to do well this whole season. First year girl wrestlers are new to the high school program but have the determination to win against Franklin Central. Especially Freshman Lexi Wallace.
“Don’t give up,” Wallace said.
