On February 3, Mooresville’s wrestling team hosted the wrestling tournament against Brownsburg, Center Grove, Avon, Monrovia, Martinsville, Pike Decatur Central, Southern Putnam, Cascade, Greenwood, Triwest, Ben Davis, Plainfield, Cloverdale, Danville, Greencastle, Speedway, and Whiteland.
Senior Derek Mayo has been wrestling for nine years.
“The hardest school for me was Center Grove because they have always been a very good school for wrestling. Before my match I’m nervous but excited and as I approach the mat with my opponent, I lose all feeling and get ready to wrestle,” Mayo said.
Senior Griffin Sanders made it all the way to semi state.
“I was excited to go against the Brownsburg wrestler, but the Center Grove kid is definitely the best I’ve wrested this year. I try not to feel any type of way before matches so it won’t mess anything up. I trust in the things I’ve already done to prepare me,” Sanders said.
Brandon Mikesell is the assistant coach.
“We got 33/48, I felt confident in our players, and I thought for sure Griffin Sanders was going to get out on Saturday. We beat the regionals champ from the Jeffersonville regional, we ended up beating them 4-3 moving in to the second round we were wrestling a kid from Heritage Hills,” Mikesell said.
