The crowd watched as the team prepared themselves and got ready. Anything could happen. No one knew what to expect. The bleachers were slowly filled in as people came to sit with their friends or family. They waited anxiously for the event to start. Some people would sit and scroll on their phones, others would talk to their peers or take pictures. So much was happening it was busy and exciting.
Suddenly the lights went dim, the crowd got quiet. One spotlight appeared right in the center of the room. The teammates had circled together and encouraged each other so now they were pumped up and ready. They lined up one after the other behind each other. They anticipated the announcer’s calling of their names then they would run to the center, under the spotlight, as people cheered for them. Finally it was time to begin.
The girls make their stance while staring into their opponent’s eyes. They take a deep breath as it is time for them to give their all. They let all their anxiety go as they wait for the cue to start. Finally, the whistle is blown and it is time for the wrestling match to begin.
The girl wrestlers were ranked 24th out of the nation and 1st in the state. They went up against Cascade on Wednesday December fourth. They have had many hard practices that have helped them get to where they are.
“Practices are three hours long and can be really hard. There is a lot of drilling and conditioning we have to do,” junior Peyton Nedelsky said.
Even with its challenges, the hard work they put into their practices gives off incredible results through their matches. It can also be really fun for the girls and help them make new memories and friends through it.
“I love my wrestling team because I have somewhat of a family bond with most of them,” sophomore Allie Silcox said.
The girls get along well with each other which is what partly helps them so well. The love and encouragement they have for each other helps them put their all in the match.
Even with the hassle of long, stressful, tiring practices, the girls put in a lot of hard work to help themselves do an extraordinary job at all of their meets.
