The National Honor Society students have many opportunities to do community work to complete their required hours. There are many projects that they can be a part of, and one of those is reading to elementary school kids. This can give kids the opportunity to hear a story and find interest in reading. The NHS students had the opportunity to go read to elementary school students in February at one of the 5 elementary schools in the Mooresville district. These include: Neil Armstrong, Newby, North Madison, Northwood, and Waverly.
“We felt this could promote libraries and get kids back into reading again since kids do not read as much anymore,” NHS President Ava Hansel said.
Reading is an important part of life and everyone should know how to do it. Reading to elementary school kids is extremely beneficial as it can help the kids to grow. It can help kids to expand their vocabulary and have a better knowledge of words and comprehend what they are reading better. “Reading is foundational and it is important to start when you are in elementary school to get a general understanding of it,” NHS Vice President Cody Martin said.
This is a huge community service project that students can do. The students that have gone to read to the younger kids have said they really enjoyed it and thought it was a lot of fun. It can make a big impact on the kids’ lives and is one of many community projects and volunteer options that NHS students have.
“Our goal is to promote reading and to foster a love of reading. As scholars, many NHS members have a love of reading and they are excited to share their love of reading with the younger students,” NHS Adviser Jenifer Butler said.
