The Mooresville High School Girls Varsity Basketball team started their sectional run on February 4th against Perry Meridian. During the game, the Pioneers held the lead throughout all four quarters, beating the Falcons 52-29. Senior Ava Shafer was the key player in the matchup against the Falcons, scoring 16 points on a 50% FG rate.
“Our strengths for the game probably would have been making that extra pass to the next player. Even if we were open we made that extra pass as a team. Once we started to get our flow going of we need that extra pass then it just became a flow for us to work together and keep going,” senior Ava Shafer said.
Since, the Pioneers beat the Falcons, they moved onto the second round of Sectionals against Decatur High School. Beating them in the regular season, the Pioneers were confident that they would be victorious. On February 2nd, the Pioneers defeated the Hawks with a score of 80-55. The Pioneers would then move on to the Sectional Championship.
“We knew that going into the Sectional Championship that we were going to face a tough team no matter who won between the Southport and Franklin Central matchup. We were hoping that Southport would pull through, but Franklin Central beat them. From there and forward, we were mentally prepared to go into the game hoping that we could pull off a Sectional Championship win,” Coach Mark Hurt said.
Held on February 8, the #21 Sectional Championship was played between Franklin Central and Mooresville. Unfortunately, for the Pioneers, this would be their last game of the season as they fell to the Flashes with a final score of 25-59. The Lady Pioneers had an astounding season having a record of 18-8 throughout the whole season.
“We had multiple expectations throughout the season; One, we had to play together. If we didn’t play together, we would not have gotten as far as we did this season. Two, we had to learn new things. Learning new things also got us as far as it did and helped us beat tough opponents this season. Three, leadership was a big thing. Being a young team, us seniors had to make sure the Freshman and Sophomores were developing and being better as a player and a person,” senior Randee Rae Garringer said.
