Electronic sports, or E-sports for short, is one of the many clubs that Mooresville high school offers. Some of the games that they play are Tetris, Chess, Fortnite, League of Legends, Minecraft, Mario Kart and many more.
Stepping into the E-sports room, instantly many kids are seen at the computers and TVs. They become focused on playing their game whilst they talk, laugh, and have a good time with their peers. Sometimes they can get a little angry if they lose, other times the environment might be calm and quiet.
They compete against many other high schools at competitions. They have even traveled to many colleges and universities for tournaments, including Franklin College and Manchester University. The team has done well over the years, even earning themselves a plaque. Sara Richmond is the E-sports coach and talks about the accomplishment of winning the plaque.
“The team has a plaque shaped like Indiana in the gym that has our state championships on it,” Richmond said.
Along with the plaque, the team has won many trophies over the years too. They are displayed in the trophy cases with all of the other sport’s trophies. They had a tournament at Franklin College on March 14 and took home 1st, 2nd, and, 3rd place. Senior Hank Stanton got 1st place and won a $1000 scholarship. Senior Landyn Westerfield got 2nd place an won a $1000 scholarship as well. Sophomore Alex Pipkin got 3rd place and won a $750 scholarship.
Even if there can be some yelling and anger when a game is lost, the environment that E-sports brings is one that many of the members love about the club. Junior Hunter Smith the Captain of the Marvel Rivals game is one of those who loves being in this environment.
“I love the environment of people I get to play games with and Mrs. Richmond is an amazing coach to have,” Smith said.
E-sports is most known for the video games that they play. However, there were still other options to choose from instead of just video games. Senior Hank Stanton and the Captain of the club talks about what else there is to do during E-sports’ practice time.
“Our basics do consist of video games, but we do have some board games we play and even some down time to do some school work if need be,” Stanton said.
E-sports can get pretty busy throughout the year, but even though there are practices every day after school, the participants enjoy it, and love what they get to do throughout the year.
