Mooresville’s Girls Varsity tennis team has been having a great 2026 season so far with a 8-4 win/loss record.
They began the season with wins against Martinsville, Tri-West, Shortridge, and Lawrence Central, then followed that with wins against Danville Community and Decatur Central. This record of six wins to zero losses is the best start of a season for the Mooresville girls tennis team in twenty five years.
Their first loss of the season came against Indian Creek with varsity losing 1-4. The team’s only other losses have been to Perry Meridian and Whiteland.
Junior Lyla Kaufman has been playing tennis for around ten years and has been on Mooresville’s team for all three years of high school so far. She is also one of the team’s captains. She enjoys playing tennis because it’s different from other sports.
“It’s a lot of running, but I can’t tell I’m doing strenuous work because I’m focused. It’s easier for me,” Kaufman said.
Kaufman is undefeated so far this season with eleven wins.
Coach Danniella Banks has made a couple of changes for this season. The main change has been workouts before practice focusing on speed and agility with Coach White.
“This is helping the girls to be in better shape than some of our opponents and their footwork is better,” Banks said.
For the next season, they have discussed splitting up practices to have a JV practice and Varsity practice to provide more one-on-one coaching.
Junior Jacey Bell started playing tennis her freshman year and has been on the team since. She is also one of the team’s captains. Her favorite part about being on the team is her teammates.
“This is just a great group of girls. We’re always laughing, and we’re always having a fun time. We’re just friends,” Bell said.
Kaufman and Bell offer similar advice to those thinking of joining the team next season: just go for it.
“Literally just do it. People are so scared because other sports like basketball and softball had leagues for younger players, but tennis doesn’t really have that. A lot of people come in completely new to it,” Bell said. “The first practice is always the hardest, so just stay with it, and don’t be scared.”
“We had a few girls who just joined the team and were nervous about it, but they’ve really improved, so I would recommend just joining,” Kaufman said.
